In June 2021, we announced that the NRG will move to the National Arboretum Canberra. Our landscape design was approved by both the ACT Government and the National Capital Authority, and planning began.
In May 2024, after more than 12 months of planning the National Rock Garden relocated to Forest 13 in the National Arboretum Canberra.
Forest 13 is about one hectare in area and is located on Forest Drive (the main access road in the Arboretum), just 100 metres north of the Visitor Centre and carparks. To complement the NRG display of large iconic rocks from around Australia, Weeping Wilga (Geijera parviflora) trees will be planted in an indigenous pattern in Forest 13.
The first set of rocks are on display (22 specimens weighing in the range of 5–20 tonnes each), including the Federation Rocks and rocks from as far away as Antarctica.
Our NRG Steering Committee and state and territory rock selection sub-committees are now busy fundraising and identifying and securing further suitable rocks for display.
